Barber
Adagio for Strings, op. 11

Originally developed as the second movement of Barber's String Quartet and inspired by a passage from Vergil's Georgics about a widening river's growth.  Although often played at memorials, the Adagio's emotional charge is both sad and optimistic.

Bernstein recorded the Adagio with the LA Phil in San Fransisco in 1982.  A powerful and rhapsodic performance combined here on this DG disc with a sensational recording of Copland's Appalachian Spring too.
