Dvorak spent three years in America between 1892 and 1895 and composed
his Ninth Symphony while he was there. Firmly in the European
tradition and incorporating themes from French, Scottish, German and
Czech sources this stunning composition musically represented the melting-pot of
cultures that America had already become at the end of the nineteenth
century. More importantly perhaps, subsequently this
symphony has come to represent the American spirit - with an
intermingling of Bohemian home-sickness.
Kubelik's legendary interpretation of Dvorak's Ninth has been reissued,
appropriately enough, in the Legends series. It's an incomparably
exuberant, emotional rendition that stirs the heart and satisfies the
soul.
