Elgar
Cello Concerto in E minor, op. 85

Elgar started work on the Cello Concerto just as the First World War came to an end and it represents the most moving lament both for the millions of lives lost in the war and for the Edwardian way of life which had passed into history so comprehensively.

The Cello Concerto has become indelibly linked with Jacqueline du Pre, who performed it first with the Halle Orchestra under Sir John Barbirolli, before recording it with the London Symphony, again under Barbirolli in August 1965.  There ARE other recordings, but this remains an essential interpretation.
