Mozart
Mass 19 'Requiem', K626

Mozart left this Requiem Mass unfinished at his death in 1791 and it was subsequently finished by his pupil, Sussmayr.  This image of a Requiem written by a dying genius has only added to the appeal of Mozart's last work - a Requiem which definitely treats death as a compassionate release, rather than a terrifying punishment.

Marriner turned in a beautifully balanced performance of the Requiem with the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, offering a bright and energetic reading and coaxing some splendid work from his soloists, particularly the very moving performance from soprano Sylvia McNair.
