Five years in the making, Beethoven's 'Pastoral' is a lyical embodiment
of the composer's love of the countryside. The most memorable
musical landscape ever created.
Taken from Rattle's May 2002 set of complete symphonies with the Vienna
Philharmonic, the Pastoral was the extraordinary achievement of the
set. Rattle's widely-publicised hope was to shock his audience,
but in the Pastoral he turned in simply an awesome performance - which
may now remain the definitive recording of its generation.
